February 14th: World Energy Day

Since 1949, the United Nations established February 14th as World Energy Day, to invite people to reflect on energy efficiency and production alternatives.

We decided to celebrate it, learning more about the vision for Mexico of one of the candidates for the Presidency, so we accompanied Ms. Rosanety Barrios who currently serves as Coordinator of the Energy Roundtables of Eng. Xóchitl Gálvez who shared with us the diagnosis and some measures that have been identified as priorities in the matter.

Mexico can be a country of middle classes, safely, with quality health care, excellent education and sufficient, well-paid jobs. To achieve this, it is necessary to work in different sectors and implement policies – in some cases it would be enough to simply comply with the Law – that help true renewal and growth in the country.

One of the main tools will be to have an energy policy that has three fundamental pillars:

  1. Rule of law,
  2. Transparency and accountability; and,
  3. A focus on women, this to reduce the gender gap.

Energy must come from clean sources and be competitively priced. In the case of CFE, I point out that it is important to strengthen it where it is still competitive and that it contributes to reducing national energy poverty. I point out that, in Mexico, although there is no official figure, it is estimated that 36.7% of Mexican households suffer from it. . Energy poverty is not just about having or not having access to electricity, but about having the economic assets that allow households to meet their energy needs. This implies having a constant and quality electricity supply that is sufficient to achieve thermal comfort, having an efficient refrigerator and gas or electric stoves, among other needs such as entertainment or lighting.

Another important point that he mentioned is the fact that in Mexico we are not allocating infrastructure investment directly to “Nearshoring” and to take advantage of this moment, it is necessary to have a solid energy policy that allows us to provide energy to new projects while at the same time It allows us to have enough energy to achieve energy security. This energy must come from clean sources to comply with our international commitments on Climate Change and have an accessible price for the entire population. Everything in coordination with the Government, companies and civil society.

For B + F, the promotion and support of renewable and clean energy projects represents a core part, since since our foundation we have worked to promote clean sources of energy, reduce risks, identify opportunities and develop the best possible technical and legal solutions to create value environmental, economic and social in renewable energy and energy efficiency projects.
